How do I start?

To begin the process of completing your tax return you can just apply online, phone, email or drop by our office. After you have contacted our office:

  • 1. We will email (or fax) you the documents to review and sign.
  • 2. You then fax (or post) the documents back to our office with your payments summaries or final payslips.
  • 3. Our office will then claim your tax back and it can be deposited into your Australian bank account, Overseas bank account or we can post you a cheque.

    What documents do I need?

    Our office will require a copy of your PAYG payment summary or a Statement of earnings or your final payslip.

    If you have incurred tax deductable expenses in relation to your employment and you have kept the receipts, just tally them and list them in the following category

    • D1 Work related car expenses
    • D2 Work related travel expenses
    • D3 Work related uniform
    • D4 Work related self-education
    • D5 Other work related expense (please detail)

    What is a PAYG payment summary?

    A Payment Summary (formerly called a Group Certificate) details your gross earnings during the financial year and how much tax was withheld. It also includes your name, Tax File Number, your employer name and their ABN.

    What is a statement of earnings?

    A statement earnings is a document on your employer letter head detailing the same information as a payment summary. It includes your name, Tax File Number, Gross earnings and the tax withheld.

    What if I do not have a payment summary?

    Our office can retrieve lost documents on your behalf. Just complete the job detail questionnaire.

    When can I claim my tax back?

    The financial year in Australia is 1 July to the 30 June. Our office can apply for your tax back anytime as long as you have finished work or the financial year has ended (from the 1 July)

    How long does it take?

    The processing time of the Australian tax returns varies depending on a number of factors, including the time of year the tax return is submitted.

    For the financial year ended 30 June 2007, refunds are being forwarded within 7-10 working days.

    For the 2008 year (jobs from the 1 July 2007) refunds are back within 6-8 weeks.

    How much will I get back?

    The amount of your refund will depend on individual circumstances including your gross income and the amount of tax deducted.

    I did it myself and got nothing.

    You may have lodged your own tax return and did not get any money back or the refund was lower than expected.

    We can review your tax return and report on the accuracy. If you are entitled to more tax back we can correct the error and request the additional tax refund.

    Superannuation, what is it?

    Superannuation is the compulsory amount that employers must pay into a government approved superannuation fund for a person retirement. This is equivalent to a pension or social payments in other countries.

    Superannuation, when can I claim it back?

    You can start the refund process today by completing the paperwork and forwarding to our office.

    Our office can only claim your refund once you have departed Australia and your Australian visa has expired. We cannot claim until both these conditions have been satisfied.

    PAYG Tax?

    PAYG or Pay As You Go tax is the amount withheld from your gross salary before you are paid. The amount varies depending on your gross wage. Backpackers are generally taxed from 29%.

    Tax File Number (TFN)

    TFN is your unique number that identifies you to the Australian Tax Office. To work in Australia you must have an Australian TFN.

    Pay slip

    A Payslip is given to you after every pay day and includes detail of your gross earnings and how much tax was withheld for this pay and your net pay.

    It also should include Year-To-Date figure for includes your gross earnings, tax withheld and net pay.

    Our office requires the final payslip with the Y-T-D gross amount and tax withheld.

    Registered Tax Agent

    A person registered with the Australian Tax Office and authorised to represent a taxpayer in their tax affairs. Registered Tax Agents have access to the Australian Tax Office computers and can view clients files on-line.

    Only a registered tax agent can charge for the preparation and lodgement of a tax return.

    Superannuation Fund (super fund)

    A fund which invests member's funds to provide for their retirement.

    A superannuation fund includes:

    • superannuation funds
    • approved deposit funds (ADFs)
    • life insurance companies paying an annuity purchased with a rolled over ETP. This would also include any ETP resulting from commutation or the residual capital value of that annuity, and
    • retirement savings accounts (RSAs).
